Therapeutic Approaches

Dr. Ashley Mlotek takes an integrative approach to therapy, drawing on several evidence-based modalities. Each person’s treatment plan is tailored based on individual needs and goals.

Though Dr. Mlotek incorporates interventions from various therapeutic approaches, three main ones are listed below:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) aims to help individuals learn new ways to respond to their inner experience (thoughts, feelings, memories) in order to take action towards the life one wants to lead. The goal of ACT is to increase an individual’s contact with the present moment in a manner that is consistent with personal values.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that our thoughts, actions, and emotions are all interrelated. As such, this therapy approach focuses on recognizing and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours to help improve difficulties. Perceptions of events, rather than events themselves, are seen as affecting feelings and behaviours. CBT also examines beliefs and assumptions about oneself, others and the world that may influence these perceptions.

  • Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) emphasizes emotion as a source of adaptive information that can lead to growth. EFT focuses on identifying, understanding and utilizing emotions in a way that helps in understanding oneself. Additionally, this therapeutic approach uses empathy and collaboration within the client-therapist relationship to help promote change.
